FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT - Peace

04-20-2020

Good evening and welcome to our nightly Bible devotional.

We have been talking about the slices of the spiritual fruit found in Galatians 5:22-23. We are supposed to produce the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are not different kinds of fruit but rather like slices of an orange. As Christians, we are supposed to produce all the fruit… every slice or aspect of this spiritual fruit. We produce this fruit when we allow God’s Holy Spirit to work in our lives. As we stay in step with the spirit on this walk of faith, the spirit works in us to produce the desired results that God has for you and I.

(Children’s Song: His banner over me is love: One way to peace through the power of the Cross).

We’ve already talked about the fruit of love and joy. Tonight we want to talk about peace. Now many people desire peace in their life. They want the noice and chaos of life to be shut out for a while so they can rest. But that seldom happens. This world is filled with troubles, grief, and frustrations. So finding peace is often times difficult.

Some people want peace so bad they look in the wrong place for it. Some look for peace with alcohol or drugs. Some look for peace by spending big bucks on a vacation getaway. Some look for peace by shutting themselves off from the rest of the world… they completely shut themselves down to their spouse, their kids, their boss, and anyone else who robs them of peace. Some people want peace at any cost so they just try to appease everyone and whatever is necessary to get some peace… and quiet.

But peace is not found in any of those things. I believe that real peace comes when you make peace with God through his Son Jesus Christ. Sin is rebellion against God. And the only way to make peace with God is to accept his Son Jesus (Jn 3:36). That is why the angels sang to the shepherds at the birth of Jesus, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Lk 2:14).

Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Later in chapter 16, verse 33, he said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Peace is knowing that the Lord of the universe is by your side and resting in that.. It’s not just knowing, but it is also living it out. Peace is sitting at ease and knowing that God is next to your side no matter what. Peace is something that you can’t attain physically because the world is almost always going to be a rocky place. Peace comes when we trust God

So when the Galatians 5:22 says that the fruit of the spirit is peace, it is knowing that when we have the spirit in us and among us, we are able to sit in peace. We are able to rest in peace and know that the Holy Spirit is with us and the peace of God is in us.

What a beautiful picture Isaiah frames for us. “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst out into song before you, and all the tress of the fields will clap their hands” (Isaiah 55:12). As we go out in joy, we are led in peace; by holding onto joy, peace can guide us in our ways. That is why you can’t specialize in certain parts of the spiritual fruit… you have to produce it all. Love leads to Joy and Joy leads to peace!

Think about the times you may be anxious, frustrated or living chaos. The world may seem to be spinning a million miles per hour, and you just need a moment to sit and be still. The overwhelming peace that can comfort you during this time comes from the Holy Spirit within us. Be still and know that I am God (Ps. 46:10)

Peace is knowing that our God is in control.

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear God in Heaven, I praise you for this glorious day. You are awesome and glorious! I want the peace that comes from knowing and trusting you. Help me to produce fruit by yielding to your spirit and allowing him to work in my life. It is in name of Jesus that I pray this. AMEN!

Let’s go produce some fruit. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Ro 12:18)! I hope you will join us tomorrow night at 6pm. God bless you and have a great night.
