My Father's Toys Ephesians 2:10

My Father's Toys

Ephesians 2:10

My father grew up in an era where you made your own entertainment. He liked to build models in the day when models were just a block of wood that you sanded and finished. He still has one of the first airplane models he ever made. As a child I wanted to play with it

so bad but he said it was “hands off.”

My dad has always been artistic. So when a friend offered him some rough cut wood that he had in storage my dad went to work plaining and cutting the wood. He knew what he was going to do. He had the idea of making kits that children could purchase in a hobby shop and build their own toys. He even made up some prototype kits which he still has.

I loved the toys he built in the wood shop. These toys were made of wood, screws, nails, paint and lots of imagination. They were tough enough to stand up to four rough children. I especially loved the tractors, trailers, and farm implements that he made. You could hook up the bailer and pretend the living room carpet was a field of hay.

Each toy was unique and personal. Dad put a lot of himself into each one. He used to have a big truck that said “Larry’s Moving and Storage” which he built for my older brother, Larry. My favorite was a white van with a Sherwin-Williams logo on it because Dad worked at their factory making paint for a while.

One of my favorite memories as a father was taking one of my sons down into Grandpa’s basement where we built a transformer jeep. Dad’s workshop always seemed like a rather magical place to me. You could use your imagination and build just about anything. Although I am not as talented as my father, I learned some great lessons from him in that shop.

My earthly father was a great carpenter as well as other things. But my Heavenly Father artistic abilities is to select ordinary people who are willing and uses them to do extraordinary things. The Apostle Paul said in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God has designed each of us for a unique and special purpose.

The Greek word from that we translate as “handiwork” or “workmanship” in this verse could also be translated as “MASTERPIECE”. It is amazing to think that God can take a sinner like me and make him into something beautiful and useful. I praise God for his creative power. I praise him that he does so many things with ordinary people like you and me if we are willing to let him do so.

So how about it? Are you ready to see what God can make out of your life?

PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Almighty, Creator God, My Heavenly Father, I thank you for the artistry that you have set before me in the beauty of your creation. I especially love the sunrise and sunsets that I see over these majestic mountains and hills. I thank you for the artistic abilities that you have given to my father so that he could share them with others. I thank you for the artistic abilities you have given to me. Thank you for your grace that has taken me from sinner to Masterpiece. Thank you for Jesus and the gift of life through the cross. You are great, loving, kind, good, and merciful. Help me to be a reflection of your grace. In Jesus' name, AMEN!
