REASONS WHY PEOPLE DON'T SHARE THEIR FAITH
#5 - Lack of empathy or compassion
Jesus had compassion for people. He didn’t just feel sorry for them. His compassion moved him to act. He healed the sick. He raised the dead. He fed the crowds. He did this because he felt compassion and did something about it. His ultimate act of compassion was his death on the cross for our sins (Jn 3:16-17; Ro 5:6-8).
As followers of Christ we are supposed to have compassion on others too. We are to be known for our love. This is what separates the sheep from the goats…literally (Mt 25:31-46). We are supposed to be moved by our compassion to meet needs. The greatest need of mankind is the need for salvation. Jesus is the answer for sin (Ro 3:23; 6:23). We need to be moved by compassion to share our faith with those who are lost in sin.
The simple truth comes down to love. As followers of Christ we are supposed to love God, love and honor our parent, love our spouse, love our children and bring them up in faith, love our fellow brothers and sisters in the faith, love our neighbors and show compassion on the needy, and even love our enemies and those who do us harm. But we don't always have love for anyone but ourselves. Cheryl S. Seidner shared this insight in a recent on-line survey about why people don’t share their faith, “(They) Don’t love Jesus more than selves.”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Mt 22:37-40).
Ephesians 5:1-2 (NIV) Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
As Christians, we are to be known for our love. One of the greatest manifestations of that love is when we share our faith with others so that they can have a relationship with Jesus that will bring them eternal life.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear God and Father, You know that I love you for you are great and you mercy and love endure forever. I thank you for all the ways that you have show your love and compassion to me. I ask that you will help me follow the example of Jesus Christ, your Son and my Savior, and have love and compassion on others. In Jesus' blessed name I pray, AMEN!
