16. Insert Yourself - Psalm 119:59
Psalm 119:59 - I have considered my ways
and have turned my steps to your statutes.
I guess I am a bit of a sci-fi geek. I watched Star Trek (TOS) when I was a kid. I went to the first Star Wars movie in the theater and over the course of the year took 4 different dates to go see it (Now you know why none of them stuck around)! Currently I am streaming episodes of The Expanse on my iPod. Yes, I guess I am a sci-fi geek.
One of the things I like about sci-fi is that I can easily insert myself into the show or book that I am reading. It makes the action more intense and makes it real for me.
Over the years I have learned to do that with the Bible too. When I put myself on the battlefield with Joshua or in the courts of Pharaoh with Moses the action is more intense, I feel what they must have felt, and the message and application are easy for me to understand and apply.
Tuesday's Bible reading reading was in the book of Judges. I was supposed to end in chapter 11. Before I knew it I was reading chapter 16! Who can stop when Sampson is tying the tails of foxes together with torches and burning out the Philistines!
This technique not only works for the action but also the other parts too. Some passages bring new meaning when you insert yourself. Try substituting the word “me” or your name in for you or the name of another character. Example: “For God so loved me that he gave his one and only Son for me, that if I believe in him I shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). Read that a couple of times and suddenly you are having an a-ha moment.
I hope you will experiment with inserting yourself into God's word from time to time. May God bless you as you read and grow in his word today.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear God; Thank you for the awesome stories and lessons that you have in your word for me. I know these stories were written to people in another place and time about specific things they were dealing with. But I also know that your word, like you, is eternal and timeless. It breathes new life into me today just as it did to others years ago. Thank you for your word that teaches me about Jesus. Thank you for saving my soul through his death and resurrection. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN!
