15. Don’t be afraid to write or highlight in your Bible -Psalm 119:32
Psalm 119:32 - I run in the path of your commands,
for you have broadened my understanding.
When we were little children in Sunday School class we were taught to respect God's word. Our little hands patted the Bible as our Sunday School teachers taught us not to throw it, leave it on the floor, color in it, or tear the pages. Then we sang "The B-I-B-L-E" and colored a picture of the Bible.
When we were in Sunday School class as elementary children we were taught about the divisions of the Bible. We memorized the books of the Bible and were taught how to use the book. We were never to write in it but to make notes in notebook. We colored book marks to use in finding verses in our Bible. Respecting the good book meant that we weren't supposed to write in the Bible.
As a pre-teen I was taught how to do sword drills and to use the Bible to defend myself against the evil one. As a young teenager I was taught how to defend my faith using the word. As a high school student I was taught how to have devotions using God's word. Respecting the good book meant that we weren't supposed to write in the Bible no matter what.
One day I was astonished when a preacher asked me to look up a passage in his Bible. When I opened the word it was highlighted in various colors. He had written notes in the margins and had used tabs to mark certain areas that he used often. I stood there gazing into this book... torn between what I had been told and what I was seeing in the preacher's Bible. He used that moment to teach me that it was okay. The Bible is a tool to use to grow in our faith and to share with others. Yes, we treat it with respect as God's Holy Word but that doesn't mean we cannot mark in it passages that are meaningful for our walk in faith.
Fearest not! God will not smite thee for writing notes, using tabs, or highlighting key passages and verses. If you still have a fear of writing or highlighting you can use removable sticky note tabs and highlighting strips that you can find in the office supply section of your local department store. The important part of the having a Bible is using it... not being afraid of it or God. A healthy respect of the word is important but we don't want to be so afraid that we never pick it up and use it.
My preacher said, "I would see a tattered old Bible with notes and highlights that has helped a person grow in faith than to see a pristine Bible sitting on a shelf covered in dust."
May God bless you today as you pick up his word and use it to help you grow mature in your faith in Him.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Oh Holy God Almighty; I praise you for your wisdom written in Bible. I want to use it everyday. Help me to use your word to help me grow in faith and share the good news message of Jesus Christ with others. In Jesus' name, AMEN!
