27. Volunteer an hour or so a week to a ministry or community outreach group - Matthew 25:37-40
Matthew 25:37-40 - “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’"
Like most of you, I have family, job, church, and other obligations that take up my time. But I also have been convicted of the many needs I see in Ashe County. There are those who are homeless and live in tents or cars. Domestic violence, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, depression, and suicide are some of the biggest problems in our county...and nation. Not to mention the poverty and lack of employment that somehow gets missed when politicians and news medias tell us the economy is the best it's been in years.
How does one make a difference in this? By shining the light of Jesus into every corner of this county and country. As I stopped by the community food pantry the other day I noticed a few familiar faces. They were busy at work sorting clothes and stocking food items while wearing a great big smile. I met another familiar face at the store who just came from helping out at the pregnancy center and then another smiling face who works with the Gideons in prison ministry. Another familiar face appeared when I went into the nursing home. All of these familiar faces are bright stars shining in the community.
I wanted to help the children so this year I started helping out with the Good News Club at Westwood Elementary. Even though it takes a couple extra hours a week I find it rewarding and a benefit to the children, the community, and the church. By shining a light into their lives now perhaps they will have what they need to overcome the problems that come their way in the future.
There are many ways to spend your time. We all have things in our lives that are important and take time but we still find some "Me Time" to zone out. Sacrifice a couple hours a week to shine some light into the lives of those who are battling darkness and despair.
May God bless you today as you hold out the light of hope to those in your community.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Dear Heavenly Father; I praise you for your greatness, your grace, love, and the hope that you have brought to my life. Help me to shine the light of your hope into the world. Help me see the needs around me. Give me the wisdom and courage to do what I can. In Jesus' name, AMEN!
